Carlie Upchurch, 25, currently residing in Champaign, IL. Relocating often around the Midwest as a child, I remember being recognized for my drawings at an early age. I can hear my mother telling people I’ve “been drawing since I was old enough to hold a pencil.” It must be true as I cannot remember a time in life I haven’t drawn.

I finished high school in Bloomington, IL in 2006 and continued to finish an Associates degree at Heartland Community College. I stayed an extra semester to complete a couple independent study painting classes with a favorite professor, friend and mentor, Michael McAvoy.

In an attempt to further my art career, I continued college at Herron School of Art & Design in Indianapolis, IN. Art school was enlightening and expensive to tackle solo, so I moved back home to Bloomington, IL after only 2 semesters. Entering the “real world” with an unfinished BFA hasn’t ceased any intuition to create and I’ve happily managed to maintain a creative work flow since my time at Herron. The occasional art festival or gallery showing, and an innate desire to continue expressing myself with art have kept me busy.

I moved to the Champaign/Urbana area 2 years ago and work as a do-all barkeep/kitchen-rat at a popular BBQ joint in Urbana, IL.

It’s great to see that you’re connected with an art group! Your work is inspiring and I love that you can express yourself so well through your art. And for sure you have been drawing since you were old enough to hold a pencil! Love you bunches!
